Question 8. Weather threats other than tornadoes affected northeast Oklahoma on Tuesday, May 4.
While not making the national headlines, the affected counties were part of the federal disaster
declaration. Look at the products available between midnight and noon on Tuesday, May 4 to
discern this threat.
|
Answer. As the May 3-4 storms moved into northeast Oklahoma, flash flooding became a threat. Flash Flood Guidance values for Craig and Ottawa counties indicated that 2.7 inches of rain over 6 hours could cause flash flooding. Both the radar and Mesonet data indicated that this threshold was exceeded. Mesonet recorded over 4.5 inches and the Springfield radar estimated over 5 inches over Craig and Ottawa counties. The heavy rainfall prompted a federal disaster declaration for flooding in these two counties. | |
