Answer to Question 7 |
|
Question 7. Look at the VIL and base reflectivity images between 2:45 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Do any
unusual reflectivity patterns appear? Look at the corresponding Mesonet plots and NWS
products issued by the Oklahoma City office. What has occured over Major, Garfield, and
Kingfisher counties?
|
Answer. Large hail and destructive wind gusts were experienced over Major, Garfield, Kingfisher, and Canadian counties. The Oklahoma Mesonet recorded a wind gust in Major county of 113 mph and a sustained wind of 78 mph for over 5 minutes. The high VIL values and the spike of weak reflectivity, called a 3-body hail spike (in which false echoes are located radially behind a hail core), suggested that large hail was associated with the storm. Storm reports indicated hail as large as 4" by 6" occurred in Canadian county at approximately 3:55 p.m. |
