Question 6. What antecedent conditions may affect flood estimates?

Answer. Soil moisture plays an important role in forecasting floods. Dry soil can absorb more water than wet soil. If an area has received rainfall consistanly over a period of time, the soil would be saturated and more flood prone than dry soil. In the case of Aug. 19, 1997, northeast Oklahoma received rainfall over the previous five days, making the soil saturated. If heavy rains fell in this area, flooding would be likely because the ground would not be able to absorb all the water. |
