Question 5. Look at the BREF1 and VIL values in northwest Illinois around 9:00 p.m. on July 17th. With VIL values that high, why was there only .75 inch hail reported?
How does this correspond to the flooding threat?
|
Answer. The VIL values indicated large hail should be present with these storms. However, the soundings in the previous question show very warm temperatures near the surface and an elevated freezing layer. So when the hail stones fall through the elongated warm layer, they melt and become smaller. The melting of these hail stones creates more rainfall thus keeping the BREF1 values and the flooding threat high as well. |
