The Fire Weather Episodes of Winter 2005-06
Answer to Question 9
9. What happens to the Mesonet wind field between 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm?
- How will this affect fire behavior?
- How will this affect your behavior?
Answer.
- Between 3:00 pm and 8:00 the winds veer gradually around from westerly to northerly as the front pushes through the region. The fire's propagation will change, too. Fire personnel will need to know of the upcoming situation.

The Bottom Line.
Sometimes, when winds shift by 90 degrees, they do it quickly. When this happens, the long flank of the fire suddenly becomes the head flame, with catastrophic results.
