Question 5. What scenarios might lead you to expect a heavy rainfall event?

Answer. Weak mid-level winds will lead to slow moving storms, and increase the rainfall totals over the areas where storms slowly pass. The deep low level moisture indicates that there is enough moisture to support longer living storms with heavy rainfall amounts. The August 18, 1997 Hydrometeorlogical Discussions pointed out the factors that could have contributed to a heavy rainfall event. The discussion mentioned the frontal boundry in southern Oklahoma, a short wave over the state, and an abundance of low-level moisture. These factors were expected to produce 2.5 - 3.0 inches of rain over the forecast area.
