Question 8. What basin characteristics could change the flood estimate
based on a given rainfall?

Answer. The main basin characteristic that could change the flood estimates is whether the basin is urban or rural. An urban basin suggests a location in the city where surfaces are less permiable to water, like concrete. This was the case in the Dallas/Ft. Worth storms of May 5, 1995. Although rainfall amounts were only 2-3 inches, the rain fell in the urban areas and flooding occured. A rural basin is one away from the city where the surfaces are permiable and water absorption is more likely. A rural basin can handle the water from heavy rains much better than an urban basin. |
