Question 1. Look at the upper-level winds from the morning of June 27, 1995 over the mid-Atlantic
states. In what direction do you think thunderstorms would move based on this information?
Does this map support the formation of thunderstorms?
|
Answer. From the 250 mb upper air chart, it appears that the general flow, over the mid-Atlantic states, is southwesterly (toward the northeast). More specifically, the upper level flow over western Pennsylvania is to the north. Winds over northern Virginia and eastern Pennsylvania blow toward the northeast. The 250 mb (approx. 30,000 ft) flow over eastern Virginia, Delaware and eastern Maryland is westerly. The diffluence aloft provides a lifting mechanism which can aid in the formation of thunderstorms. |
