Question 2. Look at the morning sounding from Washington, DC (Dulles International Airport). Is
moisture available for thunderstorms to form and propagate? If so, at what levels in the
atmosphere? In addition, does this sounding look like it could support heavy rainfall? Why or
Why not?
|
Answer. The morning sounding from Washington, DC shows a saturated profile from the surface to 500 mb, while remaining relatively moist up to the tropopause. This profile suggests plenty of moisture is available for storms to form and produce heavy rains. The surface dew point is 22°C (72°F) while the dew point at 850 mb is 15°C (60°F), both of which are very high. The wind profile from the sounding indicates that any storms would propagate slowly, adding to the threat of flooding. |
