Question 3. Look at the radar data (reflectivity and rainfall accumulations) from 8:00 a.m. to noon on June 27 from Sterling, Virginia. In which directions are the storms moving? Is your guess from question #1 correct?

Answer. Between 8:00 a.m. and noon, clusters of storms move in nearly every direction. In question 1, we assumed the storms would all move northeast, after looking at the upper level flow. This pattern of storm motions is quite unusual:
  1. Some storms move to the north or northeast as was expected (orange and black arrows)
  2. Some storms move northwest from the Atlantic (red and purple arrows)
  3. One storm is nearly stationary (black circle)
  4. One storm propagates to the south towards higher dew points (blue arrows)
